Trump to Host Unprecedented 2026 Republican Midterm Convention

US President Donald Trump has confirmed that the Republican Party will hold a midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, on September 9 and 10. The event is expected to showcase the party’s achievements and highlight its candidates for the November 3 midterms.

Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, stating that it would be “a truly Historic Event.” The convention is designed to demonstrate Republican accomplishments and will feature entertainment, although details have not been released.

Some critics are concerned that the convention may divert resources away from key battleground states in the final stretch of the election. Others worry that it could draw attention to Trump’s declining poll numbers at a time when his job performance is being questioned by 58% of respondents in a recent poll.

Trump emphasized the importance of the event, citing his “no tax on tips” policy and deregulation of fossil fuels as examples of Republican successes. He also mentioned that the convention would be an opportunity to celebrate America’s 250th birthday and build for the next 250 years of American greatness.

The idea of a midterm convention has been discussed among party officials since September, when Trump first proposed it on social media. The event is seen as a way for Trump to exert federal control over state-level election administration and potentially influence the outcome of the midterms.

The Republican Party currently holds narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress, and losing control could present legislative hurdles for advancing Trump’s priorities during his remaining term. Trump has expressed concern that he could be impeached again if Congress flips to Democratic hands.

This is not a typical midterm season event, as party conventions are usually held only during presidential elections. The Republican National Committee approved a rule in January to allow for the convention, and Democrats have already taken jabs at the plan, comparing it to other events like the Great American State Fair.
