FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Format and Qualification Criteria Revealed
The FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage format has begun to take shape, with the round of 32 set to commence on June 28. The tournament’s top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with eight third-place finishers, will advance to the knockouts.
According to FIFA’s rules, head-to-head records will be used as the primary tiebreaker for teams level on points. If necessary, the following criteria will be applied in order: (1) goal difference, (2) most goals scored, and (3) most clean sheets.
Five teams have been eliminated from the tournament due to their inability to catch third-placed teams in their respective groups. These teams include Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, and Panama.
The knockout phase will consist of the round of 32, followed by the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a playoff for third place. The final match is scheduled to take place on July 19.
As of June 24, the following teams have qualified for the knockouts: Mexico (Group A), USA (Group D), Germany (Group E), Argentina (Group J), France (Group I), Norway (Group I), Colombia (Group K), and Paraguay (Group D).
The top-ranked third-place finishers will be determined based on their performance in the group stage. The eight best teams among those ranked third will advance to the knockouts.
The knockout stage format is a new addition to the tournament, following the expansion from 32 to 48 teams.
