Colombia Secures Round of 32 Spot with 1-0 Win Over DR Congo
In a Group K match played on Tuesday, Colombia secured a crucial 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of the Congo, advancing to the round of 32 in the World Cup. The winning goal was scored by Daniel Munoz in the 76th minute.
Colombia dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match. James Rodriguez forced DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi into action with a powerful strike in the 11th minute. However, Mpasi made several impressive saves to deny Colombia’s efforts.
DR Congo, buoyed by their opening draw against Portugal, threatened sporadically through Edo Kayembe, Cedric Bakambu, and Yoane Wissa. Despite lacking a clinical finish, they continued to pose a threat throughout the match.
By halftime, Colombia had registered 15 shots, including six on target, with nine of their outfield players attempting efforts. DR Congo’s Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, also known as the “living statue,” made his World Cup debut in the stands.
In the second half, Colombia resumed their attacking play, with Luis Diaz forcing another fine save from Mpasi in the 51st minute. Yoane Wissa almost snatched the lead for DR Congo in the 73rd minute, but Colombia struck shortly after through Munoz’s goal.
The match ended with a final score of 1-0 in favor of Colombia, who moved to six points from two matches and guaranteed their progress to the knockout stage ahead of their final group game against Portugal.
