A Bombing at a Chinese Restaurant in Kabul Leaves Multiple Dead
An explosion occurred at a Chinese restaurant in Kabul’s Shahr-e-Naw area on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people and injuring several others. The Islamic State in Afghanistan (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest inside the restaurant.
According to police spokesperson Khalid Zadran, the blast killed one Chinese national, Ayub, and six Afghans. The restaurant was jointly run by a Chinese Muslim man, Abdul Majid, his wife, and an Afghan partner, Abdul Jabbar Mahmood.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement requesting that Afghanistan take measures to protect its citizens and investments. A spokesperson for the ministry, Guo Jiakun, stated that five Chinese nationals were injured in the blast.
ISIS released a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, linking it to “growing crimes by the Chinese government against Uighurs.” The group also issued a threat against Chinese nationals in Afghanistan.
The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. China shares a border with Afghanistan and has close ties with the Taliban government. Beijing denies claims of widespread abuses against the Uighur minority group, which numbers around 10 million in China’s Xinjiang region.
