Trump Allies React to Iran Deal Announcement Amid Democratic Calls for Clarity

US and Iran to Sign Memorandum of Understanding on Friday

A deal between the United States and Iran is set to be signed on Friday, with no official terms yet released. The agreement aims to bring an end to the US-Israel war on Iran.

The US President has announced that the deal will mark a strategic victory for his administration. Vice President JD Vance stated that falling oil prices are a result of the announcement, indicating a “new era” in the Middle East. Secretary of State Marco Rubio connected the announcement to Trump’s 80th birthday, praising the president’s leadership.

Several Republicans have taken to social media to hail Trump as the “deal-maker in chief”. Congressman Robert Aderholt claimed that the pending deal would impose stricter limits on Iran’s nuclear programme than the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. However, there is no indication that the memorandum will include immediate commitments on Tehran’s nuclear programme.

The agreement aims to halt fighting on all fronts, including in Lebanon. Trump’s announcement came after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the deal on X. Officials from the US, Pakistan, and Iran have stated that the signing of the deal would resume traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and lift the US naval blockade of Iran’s ports.

However, Iranian officials have said that the initial agreement will only serve as a launching point for 60 days of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme. The terms of the agreement remain unknown, with varying accounts on when the US would begin releasing frozen assets and lifting sanctions.

US Senator Lindsey Graham expressed concerns about the divergence in US and Iranian messaging. Democrats have questioned whether launching the war alongside Israel advanced US interests.
