Israeli President Isaac Herzog to Visit Panama and Costa Rica for Four-Day Diplomatic Trip
President Herzog will depart Israel on May 6 for a four-day official visit to Panama and Costa Rica. The trip aims to strengthen ties with the two countries, according to a statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
During his visit, President Herzog will meet with Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino and government officials in Panama before traveling to Costa Rica to attend the inauguration of President-elect Laura Fernandez Delgado. He will also participate in a dinner for heads of state and engage with members of the Jewish community in both countries.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry describes the visit as historic, noting that it marks the first time an Israeli president has visited Panama. The ministry states that the trip aims to bolster ties between Israel and Panama, which is considered a “true friend of Israel” and a current member of the UN Security Council.
Panama’s two-year term on the UN Security Council will be a focus of the visit, as Israel seeks dependable allies at international forums such as the United Nations. The country has historically been supportive of Israel, abstaining from votes in favor of a two-state solution and opposing resolutions calling for an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory.
The visit is part of Israel’s efforts to maintain strong relationships with countries in Central America, particularly those that are close partners of the United States. The trip will also aim to strengthen strategic partnerships between Israel and the region, according to the Foreign Ministry.
