Irans Ghalenoei and Taremi Criticize US Treatment Ahead of World Cup Match

Iran’s National Team Arrives in US for World Cup Amid Travel Challenges

Los Angeles — Iran’s head coach Amir Ghalenoei and striker Mehdi Taremi addressed the media at their press conference on Sunday, discussing the team’s arrival in the United States for the upcoming World Cup. FIFA officials had previously warned reporters to focus on sport and tactics, but the conversation inevitably turned to the challenges posed by US travel policies.

Ghalenoei expressed frustration with the tournament’s organization, citing the refusal to host Team Melli’s base camp during the games as a significant challenge. Taremi echoed this sentiment, stating that restrictive travel policies had taken some of the joy out of the World Cup experience for Iranian players. The striker also highlighted the denial of entry to Somali referee Omar Artan, emphasizing that not all teams faced similar issues with American hosts.

Iran’s team has been in high form, topping their group and suffering only one loss and two draws in 10 games during the Asian qualifiers. Despite this momentum, the team’s participation was initially in doubt due to tensions between Iran and the US/Israel. However, it was agreed that Team Melli would participate in the tournament, with training taking place in Mexico.

Ghalenoei confirmed the itinerary, stating that the team would return to Mexico after the game on Monday. The team also faces planned protests by Iranian opposition activists in Los Angeles. Both Ghalenoei and Taremi emphasized their commitment to representing all Iranians, both at home and abroad.

The team’s focus is on playing football, with Ghalenoei expressing hope that the World Cup will bring joy and unity among cultures and countries. The press conference saw little discussion of tactics, with Taremi joking that no one asked about football-related questions.
