Guinea landfill collapse results in at least 22 reported fatalities

Heavy Rains Trigger Landslide at Guinea’s Largest Landfill, Resulting in Fatalities

A landslide occurred at the largest landfill in Conakry, Guinea’s capital, on Sunday morning, burying several shacks and causing fatalities. According to a government statement, at least 30 people have been killed, with six others seriously injured.

The incident took place in the Bbessia district’s Dar-es-salam neighbourhood, where heavy rains triggered the landslide around 3 am local time. The site was scheduled for closure on Sunday, as announced by Lieutenant Colonel Balde Mamadou Bailo, sanitation officer for the Military Engineering Battalion.

Lancine Sylla, head of the Dar-es-Salam suburb, reported that 18 bodies had been recovered and taken to the morgue. Guinea’s minister for territorial administration, Djenabou Toure, visited the site and stated that she was awaiting completion of the search and rescue operation to provide an official casualty figure.

The government had recently ordered the evacuation of people living near the landfill and implemented safety measures around the site due to concerns about potential collapses. The incident is currently under investigation.
