Canada edges South Africa in World Cup 2026 group stage match

Canada Advances to FIFA World Cup Last 16 with 1-0 Win Over South Africa

In the first knockout-round match of the tournament, Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 on Sunday at Los Angeles Stadium. The winning goal was scored by Stephen Eustaquio in stoppage time, giving Canada a spot in the last 16 for the first time in their history.

Eustaquio received the ball on the edge of the South Africa penalty area and scored past diving goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. South Africa made several attempts to level before the final whistle, but were unable to score.

The match was a cagey affair, with little separating the two teams in the first half. Canada’s best chance came just before halftime when a corner sparked a scramble in the South Africa box. Moise Bombito sent a header goal-wards, which was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba.

Canada will next face either the Netherlands or Morocco on July 4 in Houston for a place in the quarterfinals. Coach Jesse Marsch praised his team’s character and resilience after the match. “It’s about the two years we’ve been together,” he said. “Think about how we talked about sticking to the plan – you guys showing your character.”

Canada had several chances in the second half, but were unable to score. Eustaquio dedicated the win to “all Canadians” when speaking to reporters after the match. The team will now look to build on their momentum as they advance to the next round of the tournament.
