US President Trump considers alternative strategy for North Koreas nuclear issue

South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung has confirmed that US President Donald Trump stated during a G7 dinner on Friday that the time had come to pay attention to the North Korea issue.
According to Lee, Trump made this comment, which could indicate a renewed focus by the US on Pyongyang’s nuclear capabilities. During their meeting, Lee also informed Trump that sanctions against North Korea were “ineffective”, citing the country’s growing military cooperation with Russia.
The two Koreas remain technically at war due to an armistice agreement that ended in 1953, rather than a formal peace treaty. North Korea has announced several nuclear tests since 2006 and is believed to possess dozens of nuclear weapons.
Recently, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has sought to strengthen ties with his allies by sending troops and munitions to aid Russia’s war against Ukraine. He also hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping in Pyongyang, following summits between Xi and Trump as well as Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Beijing.
Experts have interpreted China’s silence on the issue of North Korean denuclearization as a tacit acceptance. North Korea has repeatedly declared itself an “irreversible” nuclear state since a 2019 summit with Trump, which collapsed over the scope of denuclearisation and sanctions relief.
Trump met Kim three times during his first term, including a meeting in Singapore in 2018 where he referred to Kim as “in love”. However, no tangible progress has been made on denuclearization. The US president has since stated that North Korea is “sort of a nuclear power”, bucking decades of US policy.
On Sunday, Trump posted an uncaptioned photo of himself and Kim Jong Un from their 2018 meeting in Singapore.
