US Military Lifts Naval Blockade of Iranian Ports
The US military has announced that it has ceased all blockade enforcement efforts in Iranian ports, as part of a suspension of military operations between the US and Iran. According to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees US military operations in the Middle East, “all US forces lifted the blockade on all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports and coastal areas”.
The move comes after an agreement was reached between the two countries, allowing for the transit of vessels to and from Iranian ports. CENTCOM stated that American forces will remain in the general area to ensure compliance with the agreement.
On Wednesday, 12.5 million barrels of oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global supplies of oil and gas, after the US Navy permitted “north of a dozen ships” to pass through the blockade. The lifting of the blockade has eased tensions in the region and allowed for increased trade.
However, the fragile agreement is not without its challenges, including ongoing issues such as Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon, Iran’s nuclear programme, and the future status of the Strait of Hormuz. The administration of US President Donald Trump has defended concessions to Iran outlined in a memorandum of understanding signed by both countries, which include possible economic relief for the country.
The agreement was announced earlier this week during a White House press briefing, where Vice President JD Vance stated that the move is “an excellent thing for the American people”.
