US Beats Australia 2-0 in World Cup Match
The United States secured a 2-0 victory over Australia in their Group D match, advancing to the round of 32 with one group-stage match remaining. Christian Pulisic, who missed the game due to a calf injury, is expected to return for the team’s next match.
Cameron Burgess scored an own goal in the 11th minute, giving the US the lead. Alex Freeman headed in shortly before halftime after a VAR review overturned an initial offside decision. The win moved the US to six points and secured their place in the knockout rounds.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed his hope that Pulisic would be available for the team’s next match, stating that he is “an important player” but acknowledging that it was impossible for him to play on Friday. Pochettino emphasized that any successful World Cup run would require contributions from the entire squad.
Pulisic remains central to Pochettino’s plans, but the coach noted that all players will need to be important if the team wants to win the competition. Weston McKennie praised the US team’s depth, saying that they showed on Friday that they can play both physically and possession-based football.
The US will face Turkey in their final group-stage match on Thursday at Los Angeles Stadium.
