US lawmakers weigh potential impact of TikTok deal on national security

US and China Reach Agreement on TikTok’s Future in US Market

A deal has been reached between the US government and Chinese authorities, allowing over 200 million Americans to continue using the popular video-sharing platform TikTok. The agreement comes after years of uncertainty surrounding the app’s future in the country.

In 2019, concerns about national security led to a heated debate on banning the app. In response, an agreement was reached to create a joint venture between Washington and Beijing. Under this arrangement, a number of US investors will now control the newly formed entity.

The reasons behind TikTok’s emergence as a major political issue in the US are complex. According to experts, several factors contributed to this development. Einar Tangen, senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation, notes that concerns about data security and potential ties to the Chinese government sparked widespread debate.

Sarah Kreps, founder and director of the Technology Policy Institute at Cornell University, adds that the issue was further complicated by the lack of transparency surrounding TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. Anupam Chander, professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center, suggests that the controversy highlights the need for clearer regulations on foreign-owned technology companies.

The agreement reached between the US and China will allow TikTok to continue operating in the US market, with a new entity controlled by US investors.
