US Arms Sale Package Could Be Approved Soon, Says Taiwanese President

Taiwan’s President William Lai Ching-te Reiterates Desire for Talks with China

Taipei, Taiwan - Taiwan’s President William Lai Ching-te has reaffirmed his commitment to talks with China on the basis of “parity and respect”. During a speech at the Taiwan Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Taipei, Lai emphasized that only the Taiwanese people can decide their future. He stated that Taiwan’s efforts to safeguard its national security and maintain its democratic system should not be perceived as provocative.

The US has been providing significant support to Taiwan, including a proposed $14 billion arms sale, which is currently under review by the US government. Lai expressed hope that the arms sale would be approved “as soon as possible”. The Taiwanese president also emphasized the importance of increased defense spending, citing China’s military and diplomatic pressure on the island.

Taiwan’s defense ministry has recently proposed a new defense package worth $210 billion in new Taiwan dollars, which includes surveillance and small unmanned surface drones. Lai attributed this proposal to the need for Taiwan to defend itself against potential threats from China. The US has been urging Taiwan to increase its defense spending, while also cautioning that arms sales could complicate relations between Washington and Beijing.

Lai’s comments come amid heightened tensions between Taiwan and China, with Beijing viewing the island as its own territory. The US has maintained a commitment to supporting Taiwan’s security, but has also sought to balance this support with efforts to improve relations with China.
