US and Chinese relations remain tense amid ongoing diplomatic efforts

US National Defense Strategy Shifts Focus Away from China

The US Department of Defense’s 2026 National Defense Strategy (NDS) has revised the country’s security priorities, downgrading China as a top threat and instead focusing on the Western Hemisphere. The new strategy document, released late Friday, outlines four central priorities: defending the homeland, pushing allies to take responsibility for their own defense, strengthening defense industrial bases, and deterring threats in the region.

According to the NDS, US allies such as South Korea are expected to “shoulder their fair share of the burden” of collective defense. This approach is consistent with President Donald Trump’s previous rhetoric, which called on US allies in Europe and Asia Pacific to increase their defenses against security threats from Russia and North Korea.

The strategy document also emphasizes the importance of strengthening defense industrial bases and deterring China through “strength, not confrontation.” Relations with China will be approached through a more collaborative approach, rather than containment. The NDS notes that the US will prioritize threats to American interests over other global concerns.

The revised strategy comes after the release of Trump’s National Security Strategy in December, which argued that Europe is facing civilizational collapse and did not cast Russia as a threat to US interests. The new document also addresses Iran, reaffirming the US position on nuclear development, and highlights Israel as a “model ally.”

Key locations such as Greenland will receive military and commercial access, while the president’s “Golden Dome” missile defense system for North America is being constructed. The unclassified version of the NDS includes photos of the defense secretary and president, with repeated references to the administration of former President Joe Biden.

The revised strategy blueprint marks a significant shift in the US Defense Department’s approach, with China no longer viewed as a top security priority.
