Heatwave Hits Southern England: Schools Close, Public Transport Disrupted
A heatwave has gripped southern England, with temperatures reaching a record high of 36.1C in Gosport, Hampshire. The Met Office has issued a red extreme heat warning across large areas of the region, and there is a possibility that temperatures could reach 40C before the week is out.
As a result, over 1,000 schools across southern England have shut early or closed entirely this week. One school in Taunton, southwest England, cited the conditions as “increasingly difficult to ensure the wellbeing, comfort and safety” of pupils and staff.
Public transport has also been affected, with Transport for London warning of disruption to Tube and rail services. Network Rail has advised passengers in red warning zones to travel only if strictly necessary due to heat-related issues with overhead lines and signalling.
The heatwave has led to a surge in demand for cooling items, with some retailers experiencing waits of two to three weeks for delivery. A pharmacist in London reported that his pharmacy had not seen an increase in enquiries or requests for prescription deliveries despite the extreme weather.
London Ambulance Service has deployed over 400 extra ambulance crews on the road this week due to the heat. Fire engines and police vehicles have also been seen on busy roads, and major events such as the University of Bath’s 60th Anniversary Adelard gathering have been postponed or cancelled due to the heat.
Other European nations, including France and Spain, have also reported heat-related deaths. Bus drivers in London have reported passengers demanding they turn on the air conditioning system, but are unable to do so due to company policies aimed at saving money.
The gap between warning and preparedness has become a concern for many, particularly those caring for vulnerable individuals such as Bijal Shah’s five-month-old grandson, who is unwell and requires cooling measures.
