FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualification Spots to be Determined via UEFA and Intercontinental Playoffs
The final qualification spots for the FIFA World Cup 2026 are nearing completion through a series of playoffs. The tournament is set to commence on June 11, with four European teams still competing for their last qualifying spot. Meanwhile, an intercontinental playoff competition will provide the remaining two teams with a chance to secure their spot in the World Cup.
The UEFA qualifying process has reached its final stage, with 16 European teams vying for the last four spots available. The remaining teams are divided into four paths, with only the winner of each path securing qualification. The first round of pathway matches will take place on March 27, followed by a second round on March 31.
The four final UEFA qualifying places will be determined through a combination of performances in the group qualifying stage and the UEFA Nations League. The highest-ranked teams will host the semifinals, with the hosts determined by a draw.
In contrast, the intercontinental playoff competition features six teams from CONCACAF, Asia, Africa, South America, and Oceania. Two teams will advance to the World Cup through this tournament. The lineup of teams includes Jamaica, Suriname, Iraq, DR Congo, Bolivia, and New Caledonia.
As the qualification process nears completion, attention is focused on Italy, which has not yet secured a spot in the World Cup. The four-time champions are seeking to avoid missing out for a third consecutive time, following a decline in their domestic league, Serie A.
