Trump Deploys ICE Agents to US Airports Amid Staffing Issues and Delays

US Immigration Agents Deployed to Airports Amid Funding Dispute

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed the deployment of hundreds of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to assist in security at airports facing staffing issues. According to Reuters, ICE and Homeland Security Investigations officers have been deployed to over a dozen airports nationwide, including New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The move comes as airport security screening stations have experienced significant congestion due to a weeks-long budget standoff between the federal government and Democratic lawmakers. Some DHS funding has lapsed since February 14, affecting agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which is responsible for airport security screenings.

As a result, TSA agents have been working without pay, with over 300 employees quitting since the shutdown began. The deployment of ICE agents has raised concerns among Democrats and other observers, who argue that it will fuel tensions. Tom Homan, US border security chief, stated that ICE agents would assist TSA workers in areas requiring specialized expertise.

The deployment has sparked opposition from some Republican lawmakers, including Senator Lisa Murkowski, who described the plan as a “bad idea.” Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents over 50,000 TSA employees, condemned Trump’s plan, stating that his members deserve to be paid and not replaced by untrained agents.

The deployment of ICE agents at airports has been met with criticism from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. The situation highlights the ongoing funding dispute between the federal government and Democratic lawmakers.
