Uruguay’s Marcelo Bielsa Blames Himself for Team’s Elimination from World Cup
Marcelo Bielsa, Uruguay’s outgoing coach, has taken full responsibility for the team’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup. The South American nation lost to group-winning Spain 1-0, leaving them without a victory in the tournament. This exit follows draws against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, which advanced to the next round as second-place finishers.
Uruguay, ranked 19th in the FIFA rankings, is the highest-ranked team to be eliminated so far. Bielsa’s contract with Uruguay’s Football Association was set to expire after the World Cup. In a media conference earlier this month, he acknowledged being described as “toxic” due to his drive for perfection.
In a recent statement, Bielsa reflected on his tenure, saying that any contribution he made to Uruguayan football during his three-year stint would not be considered significant if results were not achieved. He also expressed regret over the team’s performance, stating that they should have won more points from their matches.
Bielsa attributed Uruguay’s elimination to his inability to get the team to achieve better results despite its high-quality players. However, he acknowledged that the team did not receive the luck it deserved considering their performances. This marks Bielsa’s second World Cup campaign where a team he coached failed to advance past the group stage.
Bielsa’s previous experience with Chile saw him reach the round of 16 in the 2010 World Cup.
