FIFA World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Format and Qualification Criteria Revealed
The FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage format has been officially confirmed, with the top two teams from each of the 12 groups advancing to the next round, along with the eight best third-place finishers. The tournament will feature a new round of 32, which will take place from June 28 to July 3.
The knockout phase will consist of several stages, including the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a playoff for third place. The final match is scheduled to take place on July 19.
FIFA has introduced a new tiebreaker rule, using head-to-head records instead of goal difference when teams are level on points. This change will be applied in the event of a tie.
As of June 20, several teams have been eliminated from the tournament due to their inability to catch up with third-placed teams in their respective groups. Haiti and Turkey were among those eliminated, following losses to Scotland and Paraguay, respectively.
The knockout stage format has been confirmed for the first time at a World Cup, with the expansion of the tournament from 32 to 48 teams. The top two teams from each group will advance directly to the round of 16, while the eight best third-place finishers will also participate in the next round.
The schedule for the tournament’s knockout stage is as follows: Round of 32 (June 28-3), Round of 16 (July 4-9), Quarterfinals (July 11-12), Semifinals (July 15-16), and Final (July 19).
