Aleppo Sees Efforts to Rebuild After Years of Neglect and War
A recent visit by Alhakam Shaar from Germany to his hometown of Aleppo has sparked a renewed sense of hope for the city’s residents. Shaar, who had been away from the city for over a decade, chose to stay in what used to be his father’s office in the Old City, despite the lack of basic amenities such as closable windows and doors.
Shaar’s decision was made possible by the purchase of a sleeping bag designed to withstand extreme weather conditions. However, he reported that the bag failed to meet its advertised claims, leaving him to endure cold temperatures during his two-week stay.
Despite the challenges, Shaar began renovating his old family home in the Old City, which had been damaged during the war. The roof was collapsing, and the door to the street had been removed. Two weeks of work were completed, with a metal door installed to signal that the property was no longer abandoned.
The Syrian government has started some reconstruction efforts in Aleppo, but residents are concerned about the extent of the damage and whether it will be enough to restore the city to its former glory. The city’s infrastructure is in need of significant repair, and many areas remain plagued by neglect and war.
Aleppo was once Syria’s most populous city, playing a crucial role in trade and industry. However, years of conflict have taken a toll on the city, with thousands of residents displaced or killed. The city’s population has dwindled significantly since the start of the war.
The Syrian government has made efforts to rebuild Aleppo, but much work remains to be done. Residents are hopeful that the new government will prioritize reconstruction and restore the city to its former state.
