Wimbledon Announces Wildcard Entry for Serena Williams
The All England Club has announced that American tennis player Serena Williams will receive a wildcard entry into the ladies’ singles championship at Wimbledon, marking her return to Grand Slam competition after a six-year absence. The tournament organizers have handed out eight wildcard entries in total, with Williams being the eighth and final player to secure a spot.
Williams, a seven-time Wimbledon singles champion, had previously announced her retirement from tennis in 2022 but later returned to competitive play at the Queen’s Club Championships. She will compete alongside her sister Venus in the ladies’ doubles category, having won six record-equalling doubles titles between 2000 and 2016.
The announcement was made on Instagram and X, with the tournament stating that Williams’ return is a significant development for the event. The 44-year-old American has a long history of success in tennis, holding 37 Grand Slam titles and 96 WTA titles. She will make her grand slam return at Wimbledon, where she first appeared in 1998.
Williams had previously competed at the Berlin Open last week, teaming up with Karolina Muchova of Czechia, but lost in the round of 16. Her return to tennis was announced on June 2, and has been met with excitement from the tennis community.
