Syrian Government Extends Ceasefire in Northeast Region
A 15-day ceasefire extension has been announced by the Syrian government, giving the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) more time to integrate with the army or resume fighting. The announcement was made on Saturday, following a four-day truce that expired earlier in the day.
The ceasefire extension is part of an ongoing effort by the government to consolidate its rule and secure internal stability. Government troops have seized large swaths of northern and eastern territory from the SDF in recent weeks, solidifying President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s position.
Residents in the northeast region have welcomed the extended ceasefire, with some expressing hope for long-term stability and the reopening of schools that have been closed for over a decade. The government aims to use the next two weeks to cement a long-term ceasefire and focus on reconstruction efforts.
The Defence Ministry announced that its forces would cease military operations for 15 days to support an ongoing US operation to transfer ISIL (ISIS) detainees from Syria to Iraq. The SDF confirmed the extension, stating that it was reached through international mediation while dialogue with Damascus continues.
Local authorities have reported the release of minors from al-Aqtan prison, which had been held on unjust charges. The Kurdish authorities, who previously managed the prison, stated that juveniles were transferred there due to security circumstances and received special treatment in accordance with international standards.
The ceasefire extension comes as the Syrian government seeks to bring all of Syria under state control, including SDF-held areas in the northeast. However, the Kurdish authorities have resisted joining with state and military institutions, leading to ongoing tensions in the region.
