Spain’s Lamine Yamal Scores First World Cup Goal Against Saudi Arabia
In a match played at Atlanta Stadium in Georgia, Spain’s 18-year-old forward Lamine Yamal scored his first World Cup goal within 10 minutes against Saudi Arabia. This achievement marks Yamal as the second player under the age of 19 to score in a World Cup match, following Brazilian great Pele.
Prior to the match, Yamal faced attention on social media regarding his fitness and availability for the tournament, as well as his pro-Palestine activism. On the eve of the match, Saudi fans chanted “Where is Yamaaaaal? Where is Yamal?” in reference to a viral moment from Saudi Arabia’s 2022 World Cup win over Argentina.
Yamal came on as a substitute in Spain’s opening match against Cape Verde and failed to break the deadlock. However, he made his first full start in the tournament and scored his first goal of the World Cup in the 10th minute. He continued to play well, completing 88% of his passes and making six attempts on goal.
After the match, Yamal posted a response to the Saudi fans on Instagram, stating “I’m here.” The post included photos from the match. Yamal has been a prominent figure in Spanish football for several years, earning recognition for his skills and social consciousness.
Yamal’s family background is also notable, with his parents being of Moroccan and Equatorial Guinean descent. He has used his platform to comment on issues such as Islamophobia and support for the Palestinian cause.
