South Korea’s World Cup Exit Sparks Calls for Overhaul
Coach Hong Myung-bo has resigned following South Korea’s elimination from the tournament after failing to advance past the group stage. President Lee Jae Myung has called for an investigation into the team’s performance, labeling it “incompetent people” responsible.
The team, which was a semi-finalist at the 2002 World Cup as co-hosts, lost to South Africa in the last 32, despite being among the top eight third-place finishers. The loss came after they had previously beaten Czechia 2-1 and Mexico 1-0.
Former captain Park Ji-sung expressed disappointment with the team’s performance, stating that they “forgot those lessons” learned from previous World Cup preparations. He also called for a complete overhaul of the top leadership.
The Korea Football Association (KFA) has faced criticism over its handling of the team’s reappointment process and transparency. Former captain Park also urged everyone to be ready to step down, suggesting a message to change.
President Lee Jae Myung’s comments reflect public anger towards the KFA, with fans expressing frustration and disappointment. The team was not expected to receive a welcome home event from the KFA, which has sparked further criticism.
The situation highlights the need for change within South Korean football, with many calling for a new approach to address the country’s poor performance in international competitions.
