Slovenia Holds Parliamentary Election Between Incumbent PM Robert Golob and Challenger Janez Jansa
Voters in Slovenia are casting ballots in a parliamentary election, with incumbent Prime Minister Robert Golob facing off against challenger Janez Jansa. The polls opened at 7am local time on Sunday and will close at 7pm GMT. Exit poll results are expected to be released after voting.
Golob, who has been in office since 2022, is running for re-election as the leader of the Freedom Movement party. Jansa, a former prime minister, is seeking to return to power with his Slovenian Democratic Party. Neither candidate is expected to secure a majority of seats in the parliament.
The election comes at a time when Slovenia’s domestic and foreign agendas are under scrutiny. The outgoing government has focused on social and health reforms, but results have been mixed. Jansa has promised to introduce tax breaks for businesses and cut funding for civil society, welfare, and media.
Jansa, who is 67 years old, has a devoted voter base, according to analysts. Lower turnout may favor his chances of winning the election. The Slovenian Democratic Party’s campaign has been marked by allegations of foreign meddling and corruption.
Slovenia, an Alpine country with a developed industrial base, has emerged stronger from the collapse of Yugoslavia than other countries in the region. The country has also taken a unique stance on international issues, recognizing an independent Palestinian state and imposing an arms embargo on Israel under Golob’s leadership.
The outcome of the election will determine the direction of Slovenia’s domestic and foreign policies.
