Argentina’s Lionel Messi and France’s Kylian Mbappe are currently tied for the top spot in the FIFA World Cup’s Golden Boot award, with the tournament entering its knockout stages. The battle for the top scorer title is intensifying as the competition moves forward.
The current holder of the Golden Boot award, Mbappe, has eight goals to his name from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In the event of a tie, the player with the most assists will be awarded the prize. If that also cannot be resolved, the player who achieved their goals and assists in the fewest minutes will receive the award.
Several players are vying for the top scorer title, including Mbappe, England’s Harry Kane, and Colombia’s James Rodriguez. Kane won the award in 2018, while Rodriguez was the top scorer in 2014. No player has ever won the Golden Boot more than once.
Other notable scorers include Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored twice at this tournament, including a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan in the group stage. France’s Just Fontaine holds the record for most goals with 13, achieved at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis and West Germany’s Gerd Muller also hold notable records, scoring 11 and 10 goals, respectively, at their respective tournaments.
