Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas has been suspended for one game after making contact with her fist to Caitlin Clark’s throat during a WNBA match against the Indiana Fever last week. Thomas, who was also critical of WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for not doing more to protect players, received death threats and racial slurs in the aftermath.
Thomas stated that she had not known about the suspension until 10 minutes before it was released on social media. She described the play as a “complete accident” but emphasized her concern over player safety. Thomas claimed that there have been numerous instances of players receiving threatening messages, including leaked addresses and disturbing images unrelated to basketball.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert released a statement condemning hate in all forms and expressing commitment to protecting players’ safety. The league has been in contact with the Phoenix Mercury organization and remains committed to safeguarding all players.
Thomas served her suspension on Saturday during a game against the Toronto Tempo. The Indiana Fever had previously called for player safety, citing six technical fouls and one ejection in their previous match against the Mercury. Fever coach Stephanie White described the incident as “egregious” and expressed frustration that it was not addressed by officials.
The two teams are set to play again on July 9 in Phoenix.
