Saudi Arabias FIFA World Cup Exit Leads to Federation Chief Resignation

Saudi Arabian Football Federation President Resigns After World Cup Exit

The president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, Yasser al-Misehal, has announced his resignation following the national team’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup in the first round. The team accumulated two points from three games, finishing last in Group H.

Al-Misehal stated that the team’s failure to advance beyond the group stage was not in line with their ambitions and took full responsibility for the outcome. He expressed his apologies to those who had hoped for a better performance. In light of this, he has decided not to continue as head of the federation until the end of his current term.

Al-Misehal played a key role in Saudi Arabia’s successful bid to host the 2034 World Cup, which is part of the country’s strategy to diversify its economy. This was Saudi Arabia’s third consecutive appearance at the World Cup.

The team has struggled to achieve success in major tournaments since their last knockout stage appearance in 1994. In this year’s tournament, only Japan and Australia advanced from the group stage among the seven Asian teams that were eliminated.

Prior to the World Cup, French coach Herve Renard had previously left his position due to a series of poor results in friendly matches in March. He was replaced by Italian Roberto Mancini, who then returned after Renard’s departure. Saudi Arabia has invested significantly in football over the past three years, attracting high-profile players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar.

The Saudi Pro League has become one of the most lucrative competitions in the world, with the national team’s performance failing to match its investment.
