Sabalenka, Alcaraz, and Gauff advance to Australian Open quarterfinals

Aryna Sabalenka Advances to Australian Open Quarterfinals

Belarusian player Aryna Sabalenka defeated Victoria Mboko 6-1, 7-6(1) in a match that lasted 31 minutes in the first set. The win marked Sabalenka’s fourth consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

In another match at Margaret Court Arena, Coco Gauff defeated Karolina Muchova 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to her third consecutive quarterfinals. Gauff overcame three match points before prevailing in a closely contested match.

Sabalenka will face American teenager Iva Jovic in the quarterfinals after Jovic defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-0, 6-1 at John Cain Arena. Jovic is the youngest player to reach the women’s quarterfinals without dropping a set since Venus Williams in 1998.

Carlos Alcaraz also advanced to the last eight with a win over Tommy Paul, 7-6(6), 6-4, 7-5. The victory marked Alcaraz’s third consecutive Grand Slam win on Paul.

Alexander Zverev also reached the quarterfinals after defeating Francisco Cerundolo 6-2, 6-4, 6-4. Zverev has lost all three of his previous Grand Slam title matches but is seeking another opportunity to win a major championship.
