French Athletics Federation Announces Plans to Proceed with Diamond League Track and Field Meeting
The French Athletics Federation (FFA) has confirmed that this weekend’s Diamond League track and field meeting in Paris will take place as planned, despite concerns over a historic heatwave gripping the country. The event, scheduled for Sunday at Charlety Stadium, will feature professional athletes competing in adapted format to ensure safety.
Earlier on Friday, Paris police authorities requested that the FFA cancel the meet, citing exceptional heat and emergency services’ need to concentrate efforts on protecting vulnerable individuals. However, the FFA has agreed to proceed with the event after discussions with the police prefecture.
The FFA stated that measures have been put in place to mitigate the effects of the heat, including delaying stadium gate openings, reinforcing medical and emergency services, and providing additional drinking water stations and shaded areas. The average temperature recorded at 30 weather stations by Meteo France on Thursday reached 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), matching the record for the hottest day nationwide.
The FFA emphasized its priority is the safety of all participants, including athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials, spectators, and staff. The event will only feature competitions involving professional athletes, with other activities cancelled.
