Protesters Gather Outside US Consulate in Karachi Following Assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader
At least nine people have been killed and several others injured near a United States consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, following protests that broke out after the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to Dr. Summaiya Syed, a police surgeon at Karachi’s civil hospital, at least nine bodies were brought to the hospital.
Video footage shared online showed a wounded person being transported by bystanders, while images captured protesters attempting to storm the US consulate building on Mai Kolachi Road. Large protests also took place in other parts of Pakistan, including Skardu, where a United Nations office building was set on fire.
In Lahore, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the US consulate without incident, although some attempted to damage the security gate. Police intervened without using force to disperse the crowd.
A demonstration is expected near the diplomatic enclave housing the US embassy in Islamabad later on Sunday afternoon. Protests over Khamenei’s killing have also occurred elsewhere, including Iraq, Morocco, and Indian-administered Kashmir.
Pro-Iranian protesters gathered outside the Green Zone in Baghdad, where the US embassy is located. The protests are ongoing, with multiple locations around the world experiencing demonstrations following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
