Egypt’s Hossam Hassan Emphasizes FIFA’s ‘Respect and Fair Play’ Amid US-Iran Tensions
In a press conference ahead of Friday’s decisive match against Iran, Egypt’s head coach Hossam Hassan emphasized the importance of equal treatment for all teams participating in the FIFA World Cup. Hassan stated that all teams have the right to be treated equally, as FIFA seeks “respect and fair play”.
Hassan expressed respect for all teams, including Iran, which has faced criticism regarding its scheduling and travel restrictions imposed by tournament cohosts the United States. The Iranian team was initially restricted from entering the US one day before matches, with players and staff only allowed to stay after the game ended.
US authorities have since relaxed these restrictions ahead of Iran’s match against Egypt in Seattle, allowing Team Melli to arrive two days earlier. Iran’s manager Amir Ghalenoei reiterated that US travel policies had affected his team’s fitness and preparations.
Both Hassan and Ghalenoei expressed respect for each other’s teams, with Hassan wishing luck to all participating teams. The Egyptian team is currently leading the group with four points, while Iran is in second place with two points. A draw may be enough for Egypt to qualify, but Hassan stated that his team will pursue victory regardless of calculations.
The match against Iran marks a significant opportunity for Egypt to secure their spot in the next round. Following their 3-1 win over New Zealand on Monday, Egypt’s fans are eagerly anticipating the outcome.
