New York Democrats Face Strict Rules in Upcoming Primaries

New York City Primary Set to Determine Democratic Party’s Direction

A primary election is scheduled for Tuesday in New York City, where seven months ago, democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral race, becoming the city’s first Muslim leader. The outcome of this primary will determine which candidates the party nominates to run in the midterm elections in November.

The Democratic Party’s control over Congress is at stake, as the winners of these races will decide which lawmakers can aid or impede US President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda for his final two years in office. Most congressional districts in New York City are considered left-wing bastions, but some areas, such as Long Island and the Hudson Valley, are considered toss-ups.

Two candidates, Brad Lander and Zohran Mamdani, have been endorsed by each other in an effort to secure a spot on the ballot. Lander, a progressive, has advocated for Palestinian human rights, while Mamdani has expressed anti-Zionist views. However, both politicians support Palestinian human rights.

Lander is currently challenging incumbent Congressman Dan Goldman in New York’s 10th District. The primary has been marked by disagreements over Israeli policy, with Lander calling Israel’s system of control “apartheid” and advocating for a ban on US weapons to Israel. Goldman, on the other hand, has emphasized his support for Israel and criticized the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The outcome of this primary is expected to play an outsized role in determining who gains a majority in the US House of Representatives. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) will also be testing their electoral power in two primaries, one in New York’s 13th District and another in Long Island.
