NATO Calls on European Allies to Take Lead on Defence Efforts

Pentagon Policy Chief Calls for NATO Rebalancing

US Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby has stated that the current approach of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is no longer suitable for its purpose. During a meeting with NATO’s defense ministers in Brussels, Colby emphasized the need for “partnerships not dependencies” and urged European countries to take primary responsibility for their own defense.

Colby noted that a new approach, referred to as “NATO 3.0,” requires greater efforts from NATO allies to assume this responsibility. He stated that the US will continue to provide its extended nuclear deterrent and contribute to NATO’s defense in a more limited capacity, while also training, exercising, and planning alongside its allies.

The US official clarified that his proposal is not a retreat from Europe but rather an affirmation of strategic pragmatism and recognition of the ability of European countries to step up. Colby emphasized that the US will continue to press for a rebalancing of roles and burdens within the alliance.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte described the meeting as “pivotal” and stated that he believes the US’s nuclear umbrella will remain a guarantor of security in Europe, while also maintaining a strong conventional presence. Rutte also reported on the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which provides Ukraine with US-made equipment and munitions.

The PURL program has received contributions from several NATO member countries, including the United Kingdom, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Lithuania. Rutte expressed gratitude for these pledges and expects additional support in the future. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also called for increased protection from Russian strikes, citing the need for more missiles to be supplied to air defense systems.
