Mexico Advances to Round of 32 with 1-0 Win Over South Korea
Mexico secured a spot in the knockout rounds of the FIFA World Cup 2026, becoming the first team to achieve this feat with a single goal. The victory came at the Guadalajara Stadium on Thursday, where Mexico defeated South Korea 1-0.
Luis Romo scored the winning goal just after halftime, giving Mexico the lead and securing their spot in the round of 32. Raul Rangel made a crucial double save in the final minutes to preserve the lead and seal the win for his team.
The match was marked by a high level of intensity, with both teams creating chances but ultimately unable to find the back of the net. South Korea’s Son Heungmin had a chance at goal early on, but Edson Alvarez prevented it from going in with a bicycle kick.
Mexico made three changes to their starting lineup for the match, while South Korea’s Myung-Bo Hong kept faith with his team’s formation. The game was largely uneventful until halftime, when Mexico took control and scored the winning goal.
The victory means that Mexico will host their next match in Mexico City against a third-placed team. South Korea will face South Africa in their final group stage match.
