Man charged by US Justice Department in connection with congresswomans town hall

The US Department of Justice has filed a criminal complaint against Anthony Kazmierczak, who allegedly assaulted Representative Ilhan Omar during a news conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The complaint, filed on Wednesday and made public on Thursday, accuses Kazmierczak of having “forcibly assaulted, opposed, impeded, intimidated and interfered” with Omar while she was performing her public duties.

According to the affidavit submitted by FBI special agent Derek Fossi, Kazmierczak approached Omar during a town hall meeting on January 27. Fossi stated that Kazmierczak had a syringe in his hand and sprayed an unidentified liquid from it at Omar as he continued to approach her.

Omar was speaking about the surge in federal immigration agents in the Minneapolis area, which is part of her congressional district. The administration of President Donald Trump has targeted this area due to its large Somali American community, of which Omar is a member.

In the days leading up to the incident, Kazmierczak had made several critical comments about Omar on social media and during phone conversations with associates. He also posted a cartoon on his Facebook account criticizing Omar’s role in the “defund the police” movement.

Omar has been a target of right-wing criticism since her election, including from President Trump, who has repeatedly mocked her and spread false rumors about her personal life. The incident has sparked concern, particularly regarding the substance used to spray Omar and its potential health risks.

The court document outlines several incidents where Kazmierczak had made threatening or critical comments towards Omar, including a phone conversation in which he allegedly referred to her as a derogatory term.
