New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s slate of progressive candidates has secured key victories in the city’s congressional primaries, ousting two sitting congressmen. On Tuesday, Adriano Espaillat, a five-term incumbent and leader of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, was defeated by Darializa Avila Chevalier, a democratic socialist who previously organized pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University. Dan Goldman, a two-term incumbent, lost to Brad Lander, a former city comptroller and Mamdani-backed candidate. Additionally, Claire Valdez, a state Assembly Member and democratic socialist ally, defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.
The results of the primary will determine which candidates the Democratic Party nominates for the midterm elections in November. The outcome will also influence control of Congress, with lawmakers having the power to aid or impede US President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda during his final two years in office. Most congressional districts in New York City are considered left-leaning, making it likely that the winners will secure their seats in November.
The primary results represent a significant development for Mamdani and his progressive allies, who have been actively campaigning on key issues such as Israel’s conflict with Palestinians and affordability. The mayor has been actively promoting his candidates, declaring that his election has sparked a new era of politics. In Washington, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries acknowledged the outcome, stating that he and Mamdani will “strongly disagree” on policy matters.
Other notable candidates, including Jack Schlossberg and Micah Lasher, have secured victories in their respective races. The primary results are expected to shape the party’s stance ahead of November’s midterm elections.
