Life in Gazas Tents Struggles with Illness and Daily Despair

Gaza City Struggles with Public Health Crisis Amidst Israel’s War

A family of six has been forced to live in a tent near a large rubbish dump in central Gaza City due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The Abu Amr family, who have been displaced multiple times since the war began, face daily struggles with pollution, illness, and poor sanitation.

The family’s living conditions are characterized by inadequate hygiene facilities, leading to frequent outbreaks of gastroenteritis and other diseases. Suryya Abu Amr, a 35-year-old mother of five, stated that basic cleaning is no longer feasible due to the lack of water and financial resources. The family uses makeshift cleaning materials but finds it impossible to maintain cleanliness in their tent.

The situation has taken a toll on the family’s health, with asthma attacks and skin infections reported by some members. Rahaf Abu Amr, 13, stated that she is losing her hair due to the poor sanitation conditions. Health professionals have warned of a surge in disease outbreaks, citing viral and bacterial infections with severe complications.

The public health situation in Gaza has deteriorated significantly since the start of the war, according to Dr. Ahmed Alrabiei, consultant internist and pulmonologist at al-Shifa Medical Complex. The hospital has seen an increase in cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, meningitis, severe gastroenteritis, weakened immune systems, respiratory infections, and Hepatitis A.

The family’s decision to remain in the tent near the rubbish dump was driven by desperation, with Salem Abu Amr stating that his children suffer from polluted air and water-borne illnesses. The family’s living conditions are a result of the ongoing conflict and its impact on Gaza’s infrastructure, which has left many buildings damaged or destroyed.

The situation highlights the dire consequences of the war on Gaza’s population, who are struggling to survive in harsh conditions.
