US Hosts FIFA World Cup with Star-Studded Opening Ceremony
The United States welcomed the FIFA World Cup with a high-profile opening ceremony at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California. The event featured a live performance by several artists, including Future, Tyla, Anitta, and K-pop singer Lisa, as well as appearances by actor Jason Sudeikis and singer Katy Perry.
The ceremony began with a voiceover announcement welcoming the crowd to the stadium, followed by a marching band and a display of costumes and props inspired by Los Angeles street art. Celebrities such as Tom Cruise, David Beckham, Halle Berry, Rob Lowe, Owen Wilson, and Paris Hilton attended the event, watching performers dance around a giant World Cup trophy.
The stadium’s roof was adorned with large “FIFA” letters in gold, a color favored by US President Donald Trump. However, Trump did not attend the ceremony in person; instead, he spoke to the team by phone, offering words of encouragement before their match against Paraguay.
Fans from both the United States and South America attended the event, with many dressed in patriotic attire such as Uncle Sam costumes or bald eagle accessories. The crowd’s reaction was evident during the warm-ups, with US fans booing the Paraguay players and supporters displaying dozens of flags from both nations.
The US team, led by centre-back Chris Richards, took to the field for their match against Paraguay, following a successful recovery from injury doubts. Fellow cohosts Mexico and Canada had already played their opening matches, each featuring separate ceremonies on home soil.
