Bosnias World Cup Opener Divides Fans Among Two Home Nations

Thousands of Bosnia fans attended the FIFA World Cup 2026 opening game in Toronto, wearing blue and yellow attire as they chanted “Free Palestine.” Outside the stadium, Nadia, a Bosnian supporter, stood out among the crowd wearing a deep blue shirt with the Bosnian flag draped around her. She was one of the minority of “away” fans on Canadian soil.

Nadia, an immigrant who fled Bosnia in the mid-1990s due to the genocide that killed approximately 100,000 people and displaced over two million, expressed her allegiance to both countries. She wore a Canada cap as a nod to the country she calls home, but her heart ultimately belongs to Bosnia.

Earlier in the day, thousands of Bosnia supporters marched towards the match venue in Toronto’s downtown area while chanting “Free Palestine.” The crowd was comprised of people from various backgrounds and ethnicities, showcasing the city’s reputation as a multicultural hotspot.

The fan festival outside the stadium featured a diverse range of football enthusiasts, including hardcore supporters and those attending for the atmosphere. Several Canadian fans expressed their opposition to immigration policies in the US, while others praised Canada’s hospitality.

Admir, a travelling Bosnian fan from New Jersey, commended Canadian hospitality, stating that everyone he met, from ordinary people to stadium staff, had been accommodating since his arrival. In contrast, some World Cup supporters reported difficulties entering the US due to immigration policies.

Tanya, who drove seven hours from New York to Toronto, described the atmosphere at the fan festival as “amazing” and praised the performance of her team. Despite not winning the match, she expressed a positive sentiment towards the event.
