Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Loses Mar-a-Lago Primary Election

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with US President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago yesterday, marking his fifth visit since Trump took office in January. The meeting was preceded by reports that Netanyahu aimed to secure concessions from Trump to appease his domestic political partners.

During the meeting, Trump mentioned his good relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and expressed respect for him. He also discussed Iran’s willingness to “make a deal” and provided guidelines for American involvement in any potential operation. However, Trump did not authorize a solo Israeli strike on Iran.

Trump stated that reconstruction of Gaza would begin “soon,” and mentioned the disarmament of Hamas as a necessary step. He emphasized that nearly 60 states would take action if Hamas does not disarm voluntarily. The US President also made no mention of the last hostage held in Gaza as a condition for moving forward with the deal.

The meeting was notable for Trump’s praise of Netanyahu, calling him a “great wartime prime minister.” Trump also claimed to have spoken with Israel’s President Isaac Herzog about a potential pardon for Netanyahu, although Herzog denied this conversation took place.

A separate phone call between Trump and Israeli Minister of Education Yoav Kish revealed that Kish will receive the Israel Prize in 2026. The prize is awarded by the minister of education and marks the official end of Independence Day celebrations. Recipients are typically career academics or individuals who have made significant contributions to human knowledge.

The meeting was seen as a demonstration of the unequal nature of the relationship between Trump and Netanyahu, with Netanyahu seeking concessions from Trump while also attempting to secure personal honors for himself.
