Lebanon Sees Widespread Displacement as Conflict Escalates
A significant number of Syrians have fled to Syria, with over 38,000 people leaving Lebanon in recent days. The exodus is attributed to mounting violence across the Middle East and beyond.
According to reports, Israeli strikes have resulted in the deaths of more than 100 people in Lebanon. The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed that 638 individuals have been wounded since Monday. New strikes targeted Hezbollah’s stronghold in Beirut’s southern suburbs on Thursday, with smoke visible in the area.
A drone strike on an apartment in the Beddawi Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli killed senior Hamas official Wassim Atallah al-Ali and his wife. Israel has expanded its forced evacuation threats to hundreds of square kilometers of southern Lebanon, citing imminent military action.
The escalating conflict has triggered a humanitarian crisis, displacing over 83,000 people within Lebanon. Syrian authorities and the UN refugee agency report that at least 38,000 people, primarily Syrians, have fled to Syria.
Israel’s military announced the establishment of a buffer zone inside Lebanon to protect Israeli citizens. The military confirmed that three divisions are operating inside Lebanese territory. The UNHCR has stated that a displacement picture is emerging in the aftermath of ongoing conflicts in the region.
On Thursday, Israel extended forced evacuation orders to Beirut’s southern suburbs, instructing residents to evacuate their homes immediately. This marks the first comprehensive evacuation threat for areas near the capital since hostilities resumed.
