Irans top security official meets with US in Oman over nuclear discussions

Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, has arrived in Oman as part of diplomatic efforts aimed at averting war. According to Iranian state media, Larijani is scheduled to meet with Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi and Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said during his visit to Muscat.

Larijani’s trip comes after recent talks between Tehran and Washington on Iran’s nuclear program. The talks, which took place in Oman last week, aimed to prevent a conflict between the two countries amid rising tensions and increased US military presence in the region.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has held phone calls with counterparts in Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia to brief them on the latest developments in the negotiations. The talks are ongoing, but a date for the next round of discussions has not been announced.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly called for Iran to be subject to a total ban on uranium enrichment, while Tehran has signaled its willingness to dilute its highly enriched uranium if sanctions are lifted. The US has demanded that Iran relinquish its stockpile of uranium enriched to up to 60% fissile purity.

Larijani’s visit to Oman is also seen as an opportunity for bilateral cooperation between Iran and the country. The agenda for his visit includes discussions on regional and international developments, as well as ways to strengthen ties between the two nations.

Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet with Trump in the US on Tuesday to discuss Washington’s ongoing negotiations with Iran. This will be their seventh meeting since 2018.
