German Chancellor Friedrich Merz Addresses Munich Security Conference
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered a speech at the annual Munich Security Conference on Friday, calling for unity among European leaders and their US counterparts. Merz emphasized the importance of transatlantic trust, stating that both Washington and Europe benefit from their role in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Merz’s remarks contrasted with those made by US Vice President JD Vance last year, who criticized European funding commitments to NATO and expressed concerns about democracy on the continent. Merz acknowledged Vance’s description of a rift between Europe and the United States but emphasized the need for a new transatlantic partnership.
In his address, Merz also referenced Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, warning that Europe does not need to follow the same political direction as the US. He appealed directly to the Trump administration, stating that being part of NATO is beneficial for both Europe and the United States.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also addressed the conference on Friday, saying that the US is “very tightly linked together with Europe” and that a new era in geopolitics requires reexamination of global relationships. Rubio emphasized the importance of European nuclear deterrence, which has gained momentum amid the US strategic pivot away from Europe.
The visit to Munich comes as Trump’s Republican Party prepares for the midterm elections in November, which will determine control of the US House of Representatives and Senate. Recent polls have shown declining support for Trump on several domestic issues, including his immigration policy and foreign policy approach.
