Former Bulgarian President Radev Wins Presidential Election

Bulgaria’s Eighth Parliamentary Election Concludes with Clear Victory for Progressive Bulgaria Party

The eighth parliamentary election in five years has concluded, with former president Rumen Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria party emerging as the clear winner. According to official figures, 98.3 percent of ballots have been tallied, showing Radev’s party taking 44.7 percent of the vote and likely securing roughly 130 of the 240 seats in parliament.

Radev will be the next prime minister, following a campaign that positioned him as an outsider seeking to rid the country of its “oligarchic governance model”. The former air force commander has been vocal about his stance on corruption and political turmoil, which has gripped the country of 6.6 million people.

Radev’s foreign policy stance has drawn attention in Europe, with some critics labeling him as “pro-Russian” due to his opposition to providing military support to Ukraine and calls for renewed relations with Russia. However, Radev maintains that he is taking a pragmatic approach, citing Bulgaria’s unique position as both Slavic and Eastern Orthodox.

Following the election, Russia congratulated Radev on his victory, welcoming his statements regarding resolving problems through dialogue. The European Commission has also acknowledged Radev’s willingness to cooperate with pro-European parties on issues like judicial reform.

Radev’s stance on EU policy has been criticized by some, who label him as eurosceptic due to his criticism of aspects such as renewable energy and Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro. However, he has signaled his commitment to continuing on Bulgaria’s European path.
