Eurostar Services Suspended Due to Technical Issue
Passenger train operator Eurostar has indefinitely suspended its services between London and Europe due to a technical issue at the Channel Tunnel. The disruption, which began on Tuesday, affects travel through the undersea tunnel connecting the UK to continental Europe.
According to Eurostar, a power supply problem occurred in part of the tunnel, causing a shuttle train to come to a halt inside. The operator has suspended all train travel between London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Brussels until further notice.
Eurotunnel, the Channel Tunnel’s operator, reported that the power supply issue started in the tunnel, affecting both passenger and vehicle travel by rail in both directions. The company stated that a technical intervention is required to resolve the situation, which is currently underway.
Passengers were left stranded at stations such as London’s St Pancras and Paris’ Gare du Nord, with many having suitcases and end-of-year holiday plans disrupted. Some passengers attempted to book alternative transportation, including flights or buses, while others expressed frustration and disappointment on social media.
The Channel Tunnel, which spans 50km (32 miles), has been in operation since 1994 and carries a record-high 19.5 million passengers annually. The disruption is the latest incident affecting Eurostar, following previous issues with electrical faults and cable theft on train tracks in northern France.
