Chinese President Xi Jinping Visits North Korea Amid Strengthening Ties with Beijing and Russia
Beijing, [Date] - Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Pyongyang on his first overseas trip this year, marking a significant development in China-North Korea relations. The two-day visit aims to promote greater cooperation between the two nations.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning, both sides will utilize the visit as an opportunity to enhance their relationship in line with current circumstances. This marks Xi’s first overseas trip since 2016 and comes at a time when North Korea has strengthened its ties with Russia.
China and North Korea have maintained close relations dating back to the Korean War in the early 1950s. The conflict ended with an armistice in 1953, but the two Koreas remain technically at war. China’s involvement in the conflict resulted in significant losses for Chinese forces, estimated between 200,000 and 400,000 soldiers.
In 1961, Beijing and Pyongyang signed the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance, which obligates China to intervene militarily if North Korea is attacked. Despite this commitment, China has also improved economic relations with South Korea in the 1980s.
China’s stance on North Korea’s nuclear ambitions has been inconsistent. The country opposed North Korea’s first nuclear test in 2006 and subsequent tests in 2013 and 2016. However, Beijing has made efforts to repair ties with Pyongyang since 2018, including a meeting between Xi and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in March 2018.
Xi’s visit to Pyongyang comes amid strengthening relations between China and Russia. The two countries have signed a mutual defense pact, and Russian President Putin visited Pyongyang in 2024 as part of efforts to boost defense ties. Analysts note that China is cautious of the growing relationship between North Korea and Russia, which has significant implications for regional geopolitics.
