Canada Earns First World Cup Point with Draw Against Bosnia and Herzegovina
In a Group B opener that had long looked like it would end in defeat for Canada, the team salvaged a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina at their home stadium. The match began with Bosnia taking an early lead in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic scored his first international goal on a flick-on from a corner.
Canada responded strongly, creating several scoring opportunities but struggling to find precision in their finishing. Despite this, they continued to press forward and were rewarded in the 76th minute when Cyle Larin came off the bench and scored an equalizing goal with a deflected strike.
The result gave Canada its first-ever World Cup point, although it fell short of the winning start they had craved. The team’s all-time leading scorer, Jonathan David, had a chance to put Canada in front early on but sent his shot wide of the goalkeeper.
In the second half, Bosnia nearly doubled their lead when Ermedin Demirovic went through on goal, but Maxime Crepeau made a crucial save to keep the score level. The stage was set for Larin, who scored Canada’s first World Cup goal on home soil in the 78th minute with a right-footed shot from the center of the box.
The match ended with both teams creating chances, but neither could find a winner. The result marked an important milestone for Canada in their World Cup campaign.
