Brazilian Federal Police Conduct Raids in Corruption Investigation
Federal police in Brazil have carried out over a dozen raids as part of an ongoing corruption investigation into Banco Master, a former lending bank. The raids, which took place on Thursday, targeted several individuals and locations in the federal district of Brasilia, as well as the states of Bahia and Sao Paulo.
One of the targets was Senator Jaques Wagner, 75, who is a member of the governing Workers’ Party coalition in Congress. Wagner has been accused of receiving “undue economic advantages” from Banco Master, including access to private planes and compensation, such as millions of dollars and an apartment.
The Brazilian Supreme Court authorized the search warrant for Wagner’s connection to Banco Master, allowing investigators to explore a possible illicit relationship between the bank and the senator. Wagner has denied any illicit activity, including receiving funds from Banco Master.
Other warrants were executed on Thursday targeting figures like Augusto Lima, one of Banco Master’s former business partners. The investigation is ongoing and aims to uncover the extent of Banco Master’s financial crimes and their potential impact on government corruption.
The raids have grown to involve both sides of Brazil’s political spectrum, with some politicians facing scrutiny for their connections to Banco Master. The scandal has also sparked attention in the country’s upcoming presidential election, which is set to take place in October.
In related news, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, a right-wing presidential candidate, released 12 points of priority for his government if elected president. These included building new prisons and reducing the age of criminal responsibility. The investigation into Banco Master has also led to the release of alleged WhatsApp messages between Senator Bolsonaro and Banco Master’s former owner, Daniel Vorcaro, which purportedly show a connection between the two men.
